3 big reasons why online learning makes financial sense for the younger generation
How do the tuition fees compare to that of a university education, and how does online learning get the next generation career ready and earning faster?
As part of our series for parents, we’ve looked a little more closely at why online learning makes more financial sense for the younger generation against traditional education.
What are the benefits of online learning?
Online training is designed and written to be self-paced and self-directed. This naturally dictates flexibility and empowerment, helping the learner organically absorb and retain information at a higher rate to that of a classroom. In addition to the facilitation style of delivery, online learning means that we can choose our environment. A more comfortable learning environment ensures happiness and high productivity levels.
It’s often said that ‘time is money’ and learning from your chosen destination equals increased flexibility, so ‘fitting it in’ is free from journey time (just to engage with a subject) which equates to an overall increase in study time itself.
The 1-2-1 nature of online learning also creates an enhanced interaction with the subject matter, leading to those of a shy or reticent nature to have a genuine participation. This is where those nervous of a classroom or group scenario can thrive and grow without the fear of peers or general insecurities halting their progress. Learning mentors and tutors can also be exclusively communicated with by email or web-chat, automatically removing the embarrassment of ‘asking a stupid question’ directly or verbally.
A big financial win for self-paced studies is the ability to engage with gainful employment whilst up-skilling. This will ensure that ‘real life’ soft and hard skills can be learnt and absorbed whilst earning and learning. Employers also love self-starting and motivated candidates. Should your end goal be an advanced role within the IT sector, then any employer will love the fact you’re spending your own time and money on achieving your goal. They’ll also benefit from an ultimately ‘over qualified’ member of staff to that of which they originally employed.
“Demonstrating that you have skills for the role is always important and, when it comes to standing out from other applicants, having the right training under your belt will stand you in good stead.
If you’re in employment, taking the initiative to learn a new skill will bring added value to your current job. In an increasingly competitive market, employers are willing to pay higher salaries for applicants with up-to date knowledge who can bring the most sought-after skills to their business.” – Mark Rhodes, Reed
Is online learning cheaper than university?
English universities can charge up to a maximum of £9,250 per year for an undergraduate degree and the total average cost of studying in the UK is estimated to be at least £22,200 per year, with studying in London likely to be significantly more expensive. Add this to the cost of living and the overall expense of a university education becomes somewhat eye-watering.
Online learning cuts out the need for accommodation, travel, or venue. It also ‘spreads the cost’ of a physical tutor across unlimited students – due to video based instructor led content accessible in the cloud. This can be likened to e-commerce, where once we would have to make a physical journey, followed by a physical interaction to obtain an item, the world wide web now enables us to simply ‘one click’ removing all associated overheads and time to the equation.
