1. YouTube users watch over 3 Billion hours of video a month

That’s a lot of eyeballs.

Even though marketers have known for sometime now that ‘video’ is the next big thing, this statistic from Hubspot is still quite mind-blowing. Think about it, the average lifetime is 672,000 hours – watching youtube for the entirety of our lives would only represent a drop in the ocean of that number. This is why swatting up on video production and making it part of your toolbox as a marketer is hugely valuable. It’s now a major part of the online experience and something to nail down if you want to be an all-rounder of a marketing professional.

2. Nearly 200 million have installed ad blocking software

According to research revealed by Business2Community nearly 200 million of us have ad blocking software. This means that while many marketers are still throwing budgets at advertising – 10% of their total marketing budget – over 200 million – aren’t accessible. That’s a lot of virtual ‘talk to the hand’ action from consumers who are tired of being sold to online.

The majority of which appears to be millennials, who won’t click on ads because they don’t trust them. The good news is that the same research revealed that native ads are viewed 53% more than banner ads. Reiterating the importance of an authentic marketing strategy that gains trust and loyalty from consumers through organic routes such as content and, as above, video.


3. 74% of people use Facebook for professional purposes

For many years there has been a wide assumption that Facebook is just not the right platform for businesses and is only useful to consumer brands. Now? Not so much.

In fact Facebook is now a top hangout spot for more mature business types don’t cha know, with 74% of people using it for professional purposes. Those young consumer trendy hipster types tend to frequent the Instagram feed – more on that later. Back to Facebook – despite the latest algorithm update gossip – basically Mark Zuckerberg deciding to improve user experience by decluttering feeds from advertising- with the right organic content and by boosting your budget to boot, Facebook is a great tool for businesses.

 4. Email opens on smartphones & tablets has increased 80%

Why is this mind-blowing? Well, it’s not up there in the Kim/Kanye stakes of ‘OMG they didn’t?’ but many have long felt that email marketing is no longer as effective or a great way to connect with audiences on mobile. Well, this stat from Litmus blows that theory wide open. Since email providers have stepped up their game with user experience, mobile devices are now a major source of email usage. So, if you weren’t already on this, it’s mucho important to ensure that your email marketing message is mobile compatible.


5. Instagram is one of the fastest growing platforms

Many businesses are still focusing on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter as core social platforms, but Instagram actually offers higher interaction rates than the lot apparently.

“B2B companies see, on average, 22.53 interactions per 1000 followers per post on Instagram. This is compared to 5.99 on Facebook, 1.09 on LinkedIn, and 0.86 on Twitter.”

Yet, only 33% of B2B organisations are using it. The main factor putting some businesses off is that 80% of the audience are under 35. This comes back to assumptions that senior decision makers are much older. An assumption that will cost, given that over half of B2B researchers were actually found to be millennials in the same research. Potentially further explaining why there has been growth with business engagement in this area.
