5 tips to get you started with Google Analytics

Arguably one of the most powerful web analytics tools out there, Google Analytics costs nothing to set up and can integrate with other Google programs like Adwords and Adsense too. 

It’s pretty awesome.

Whether you’re a business owner looking to gain a better understanding of your consumer, a web designer interested in what drives people to your site, or a digital marketer wanting to track the success of your campaigns, Google Analytics has something for you.

Here are our top tips to make sure you’re getting the most out of your website.

1. Ensure your account is fully integrated

First things first, you need to make sure your campaigns are being tagged correctly. 

This means you ensuring your dashboard is accurate and that your display ads, email campaigns and any other campaigns are being reported correctly as traffic sources in GA. 

By using Google URL builder you’ll be able to add tracking codes for your URLs. These provide key information that Google Analytics can use.

2. Track your goals

Now this is one of the most straightforward features of Google Analytics, but one that’s often over looked. Without figuring out your goals, there is no way to measure the success of your site. 

If you’re struggling to think of them, just ask yourself – what is the purpose of the site? Is it to raise awareness of a particular issue? Is it to drive sales of a product? Do you want revenue from advertisements?

Once you’ve answered these questions you’ll be able to set up metrics to identify if you’re meeting these goals. Later these will help you track which pages are the most successful for gaining subscribers, what keywords drive traffic to your site, and much more.

3. Target audience identification

So you may think you have a good idea of your consumers, but the audience reports on Google Analytics are a great way for you to determine whether or not your initial perception was correct. 

These reports offer a whole host of user specific information, from where they’re based, how old they are… even down to what their online interests are – allowing you to make more informed decisions to what you put on your site.

Knowing your audience are keen football fans for example, means that you can target your content towards that.

4. Custom dashboards

Another great thing about Google Analytics is the custom dashboard feature. Dashboards allow you to see all your stats in one place and get an overview of how well your site is performing. 

They’re simple to create and you can include up to 12 widgets on each dashboard, as well being able to share them across multiple accounts.

5. Multi channel funnels

The last handy feature for when you get started is the multi channel funnels section – another area that perhaps isn’t being used by as many people as it should. Most the data on GA works on the basis of conversations being measured on the ‘last click’. 

For example, if someone came to your site by a PPC add – didn’t buy – but later came back to you and purchased some goods after an organic search, the whole conversation would be accredited by the organic search.

Multi channel function allows you to dig a little deeper and go back over the last 30 days to track the paths leading to that purchase. If you want to get some more information on this, head to Google’s help pages.
