Erike Akwuba | IT Student Testimonial

We catch up with psychology graduate and Learning People student Erike Akwuba who became an Associate Technical Support Engineer by studying and passing the CompTIA A+

Tell us why you enquired with Learning People

I was looking for something different and a complete career change and was searching for IT based learning as I knew I didn’t need to have a degree to get into it. So I got in touch with Learning People and spoke about the opportunities and the rest is history. I enrolled and it was definitely a blessing.

Were there any specific skills you were looking to gain or develop by enrolling with Learning People?

I started from scratch and didn’t really have an idea about the certifications that I needed or what was involved, it was only after I spoke to my Career Consultant and did more research about the different avenues and paths you can take in IT that I knew what to do.

Was there a particular reason you chose to enrol with Learning People, and did you speak to any other educators or training providers?

I didn’t speak to many other providers, but the way that Learning People spoke about the whole proposition in such detail and what it entails and what you can achieve was enough to make me want to get into IT.

Tell us what the career consultation phone call was like for you

It really lived up to what I was told. The CompTIA A+ has enabled me to kick start my career in IT. I’m really happy I’ve been able to get my foot in the door.

Tell us about your experience of learning online using our system and the associated labs

It’s been really good. The platform allows different ways of learning to suit different people. You have the e-books if you’re into reading, the videos that explain and talk you through what you need to know, the mock exams and practice papers, so you can actually go through the exams and familiarise yourself with the type of questions they ask. The labs also allow you to put everything that you’ve learnt into practice. So it’s an all encompassing portal and platform to suit different people. I found it really helpful to use all the different methods of learning.

Were you able to gain support from our StudentCare™ team when you needed it?

Yeah, definitely, I would say the Student Care team were always there to provide support when I needed it.

Did you utilise any of the course mentoring – if so, how did it help you?

Yes, I was struggling at one point and my mentor gave me a lot of encouragement and reassured me to stick with it.

How did you get on with the practice exams /  test preparation?

They were very helpful as they gave me a replication of what to expect in the actual exam. The practice exam mimics the real exam so you can get accustomed to how it will actually be.

Did you attend any of our Live Online Classrooms for your courses?

Yes, I went to a few live classrooms for the CompTIA A+ CORE – the teacher would go over the core concepts that are all part of the exam objectives. So if there are certain areas that you need to brush up on they will go through it with you so you fully understand.

Tell us about your experience of working with our Career Services team, and what did you find most useful?

All aspects of Career Services were useful. CV, LInkedIn, and being job ready. They were there the whole way through the process of me getting my job. They even found out who the key players were in the company I was looking to work with which was invaluable in getting hired.

They got me set up and ready for interviews, taught me how to present myself and put myself forward as a strong candidate for the job. It was really helpful to not just get the education and certification, but also learn how to land the job and close the deal.

How did enrolling with Learning People affect your career?

It’s enabled me to make a complete career change, prior to this I was a courier delivering parcels. I do have a degree in psychology, but that didn’t allow me to get a new career. I knew I didn’t want to deliver parcels forever and finding Learning People has allowed me to make a complete change.

Tell us about your new job

Right now we provide monitoring for an IT infrastructure. My role is Associate Technical Support Engineer. We deal with queries and troubleshoot all types of issues. I’m continuously learning. Our software also integrates with Azure and AWS so I’m getting the chance to learn about those platforms too, which is in line with my career trajectory. I want to end up being a Solutions Architect, so getting real world exposure to this technology is really helpful.

What has been the best part of your Learning People experience?

I’d say the best part has been landing the job, which is a result of me making the effort to get the certification and learning what I needed to in order to pass. It’s been a great experience for me.

What advice would you give to somebody who is thinking about enrolling with Learning People?

I’d recommend you give it a try and stick with it!
