Why a First-Time Pass Is a Scheduling Problem
A failed Microsoft role-based exam costs the fee again plus a 14-day wait from the second attempt onward, capped at five attempts in any 12 months. The fee is the small part. The expensive part is the 20 or 30 hours of study your engineer has to repeat, and those hours come out of billable capacity either way.
Structured preparation moves the number, and the awarding bodies price that in themselves. PeopleCert’s ITIL Foundation eLearning+ bundle costs £968 and includes a free exam retake, which tells you plainly what it expects an unaided candidate to need.
Build the Certification Study Plan Around the Billing Calendar
Put study hours in the same scheduling system that holds client work, not in a spreadsheet nobody opens. Two hours, twice a week, blocked like a client appointment, beats a heroic weekend before the exam.

If four engineers sit the same exam in the same fortnight and two fail, you lose the same two weeks twice over and your bench dips at the same time; therefore, it makes sense to stagger start dates across the team.
Book the Date First, Then Gate It on a Practice Assessment
An exam with no date booked is a plan with no deadline, and it slips every time a P1 lands. Book the sitting at the start of the study block.
Then gate it. Microsoft publishes free practice assessments for its role-based exams, and AWS offers practice question sets on Skill Builder. Set a threshold your engineer has to clear before the booked date stands: consistently above the real pass mark, not level with it.
Remember, ITIL Foundation passes at 65%, so 65% in practice is not ready, whereas 80% is.
FAQs About Certification Study Plans
Set the dates, protect the hours
Pass rates go up when the study block is treated like a client commitment and the exam date is fixed before anyone opens a course. That means one owner for the certification calendar, booked sittings, and a practice-assessment threshold that has the authority to move a date.
If you're carrying unused vouchers or can't say which engineers are exam-ready this quarter, book a free consultation. We'll benchmark where the team sits against the exams you need them to hold, then build the study schedule around your billing calendar rather than beside it.
