Australia’s Cyber Security workforce faces sustained demand, according to latest Government reports

The Australian Government’s most-recent Labour Market for Migrants report reveals that employment in the Cyber Security sector is set to grow by 14.2% by 2029.

The Australian Labour Market for Migrants report provides regular insight into the Australian Labour Market, with the latest version highlighting Cyber Security as a particularly ‘hot topic’. 

Driven by strong employment growth, elevated vacancies and national shortages, Cyber Security roles are continuing to outpace average total employment across Australia.

Employment in Cyber Security is continuing to grow

  • From August 2024 to August 2025, there was a staggering 3,300 increase of people employed in Australia within Cyber Security. There are now a huge 70,900 Database and System Administrators and ICT Security Specialists employed across Australia.

  • Employment in Cyber Security in Australia is outpacing the country’s average total employment rate by 6.6%.

In addition, the Australian Cyber Security Strategy 2023-2030 has identified that workforce growth is crucial to national resilience - so it’s expected that the number of employed cyber security professionals in Australia will keep increasing.

There is an on-going Cyber Security skills shortage

  • There is a nationwide shortage across numerous cyber security occupations - including Cyber Governance Risk and Compliance Specialist, Cyber Security Architect and Cyber Security Operations Coordinator. 

  • With an average of just over 621 new job advertisements per month between September 2024 - September 2025, the demand for cyber security professionals is undeniable. 

The Australian Computer Society’s (ACS) 2025 Digital Pulse report echoes the Government’s findings, revealing that an estimated 54,000 more skilled people in cyber security operations and management will be needed by 2030.

An average of 154 million blocks per month happen in APAC, making this the most frequently attacked region.

Finally, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the median full-time non-managerial earnings for cyber security professionals is $2,284 per week: that’s a salary of over $118,000.
