Report reveals Australia needs 230,000 tech workers by 2030

There is no denying that digital skills are now essential across Australia’s entire workforce, but how can people keep up with demand and find their place in 230k+ new roles?

5 min read

As technology evolves, workers across all sectors must commit to continuous learning to keep up with shifting skill demands in areas such as AI, cyber security and data analytics

A recent report from Deloitte and ACS (Australian Computer Society), revealed that the growth of the tech industry in Australia alone would lead to an additional 230,000 tech workers by 2030. The technology industry contributes nearly $134 billion to the Australian economy and employing over 1 million workers and that’s only set to increase.

However, 77% of tech workers believe they currently have at least one inadequate digital skill, so how can Australia’s workforce get ready for this incoming tech recruitment boom?

Business leaders put more trust in industry certificates than university degrees

According to the report, 49% of tech workers wanted to develop their cyber security skills, and with large scale cyber-attacks happening, that comes as no surprise. The other two areas workers were most interested in upskilling in were AI and machine learning (47%) and data analytics & visualisation (39%).

In the past year, 96% of technology professionals have taken steps to improve or maintain their digital skills, compared to 70% of the wider workforce engaging in reskilling. This significant gap highlights the growing need for continuous digital upskilling in tech roles, where staying current with evolving tools and practices is essential for career longevity and success.

In fact, 41% of surveyed business leaders view industry certificates as more effective indicators of tech worker performance than university degrees. They were also 1.5 times more likely to place their trust in industry certifications than university degrees when it comes to developing digital skills.
