Why Person-Centred Project Management is Crucial in the Age of AI
As the line between technical roles and “people roles” blurs amid global AI implementation, I examine where this leaves project management professionals and the wider project management sector. My main finding: “human” skills have never been more important in this space.
It’s no secret that AI is transforming the world of project management globally. From planning and automating admin to risk mitigation and reporting, AI is continuing to take on more and more project-based tasks, freeing up extra time to focus on strategy.
As someone who’s worked in project management career consultancy for over a decade, I’ve spoken to so many people lately who are unsure where human judgment ends and AI begins. While refining the use of AI in 2026 is important for career progression, it’s critical to remember that human leadership, empathy and decision-making sit at the heart of effective project management.
Project management sector surveys and data are repeatedly showing that in an era of rapidly evolving digital technologies - like AI - developing and successfully using human-centred soft skills is now more important than ever.

Project management skills AI cannot replace
Although AI is everywhere, there are skills that AI can’t replace: primarily, soft skills. More and more key organisations and leaders in the project management sector are recognising that the future of AI use is human-led. “Humaness” is still at the heart of project management
As highlighted by Cornerstone’s 2026 Skills Economy Report, every role requires a 50-50 balance of technical and human capabilities, with the line between “technical jobs” and “people jobs” becoming increasingly blurred.
The report highlights that +95% of AI Engineer roles require emotional intelligence, and +22% of customer service representatives need data skills. Effective project management professionals carefully balance AI integration with human collaboration and decision-making.
This is what sets great Project Managers apart from good Project Managers.
