Secure your digital identity on World Password Day

Learn key strategies for strengthening your password security. This blog covers essential tips like using a password manager, regularly updating passwords, and more to protect your digital life.

Happy World Password Day! Every first Thursday of May, we take a moment to acknowledge the vital role that strong, secure passwords play in protecting our digital identities. Initiated in 2013, World Password Day prompts us to evaluate and enhance our password hygiene. Given that over 80% of basic web application attacks are due to compromised passwords, dedicating a day to this aspect of cybersecurity is crucial.

The importance of password security

In our digital age, nearly every aspect of our lives is online. From banking to social media, and everything in between, strong passwords are our first line of defence against cyber threats. The inconvenience of updating passwords and creating complex ones is minimal compared to the potential risks of having personal information stolen.

Here are some key strategies to enhance your password security:

Use a password manager

A password manager can generate strong, random passwords that don't resemble any actual words, making them tough for cybercriminals to crack. A password manager will also store your passwords, meaning you won’t have to remember a string of long, complex compilations of characters. Most smartphones now have a built-in password manager, like the Keychain on iPhones that integrates with Face ID for secure access.

Change passwords regularly

If you suspect your accounts have been breached, change your password straight away. But don’t leave it until it’s too late. It’s a good idea to proactively change your passwords every 6 to 12 months. Schedule a reminder to update your password and avoid clinging to the password you made when you were a teenager.

Avoid repeating your password across platforms

Using the same or similar passwords across different accounts can leave you vulnerable to 'credential stuffing' attacks, where stolen login credentials are used to breach multiple accounts. Ensure each password is unique to its respective account.

Use a variety of characters

Creating a strong password that includes special characters, numbers, and both uppercase and lowercase letters is crucial. Stay away from using easily guessable details, such as personal dates or names, as cybercriminals can very easily access these with one quick scroll through your Instagram.

Enable multi-factor authentication

For additional security, activate multi-factor authentication on your accounts. This extra step helps protect your data even if someone manages to guess your password. MFA also notifies you of any unusual login attempts, providing an opportunity to change your password if needed.

Don’t save passwords on shared computers

You should avoid accessing personal or confidential data on public computers. However, if you do use a public computer, you should make sure to use your own account and prevent the computer from autosaving your passwords. Remember to always log out.

By adopting measures like those listed above, you can significantly enhance your defence against cyber threats. Let's not underestimate the power of strong passwords as the first line of defence in our digital lives. Take this opportunity to review and strengthen your passwords, ensuring a safer online experience for yourself and those around you.
