Bench depth is a specific number of AWS and Microsoft certifications already used to set your partner tier. AWS's Advanced tier requires 8 accredited individuals and 4 Foundational certifications; Premier requires 20 and 10. Microsoft's Solutions Partner designations need a 70-point capability score, and a qualified workforce carry roughly half of it. Certifying your staff that are already on your bench closes that gap in weeks. A new hire takes months and doesn't move the score until they've certified too.

AWS reviews these thresholds periodically, so check Partner Central before planning headcount against them. What won't change is the shape of the requirement: named, certified people, not a services description or a case study.
Why Certifying Your MSP Cloud Capability Beats Hiring
An engineer already on your bench already knows your clients' Azure tenants or AWS accounts. They can sit an Associate-level exam within a few weeks of focused study. A new hire has to be found, interviewed, and ramped on client environments before they're even billable, let alone certified, and the client relationship stays with the engineer who's already there, not the one you haven't hired yet. Microsoft is also retiring its assessment-based skilling paths through 2026, so the easy route to skilling points is closing. A proper certification pathway is the only route left anyway.
