Where to Find Jobs Online: A Guide to the Best Job Search Platforms

With +1.6 billion job seekers now using online platforms, here's how to maximise your job search and access the best positions via the "hidden" job market.

10 min read

Finding a job online has never been easier, with SQ Magazine reporting that as of 2025–2026, over 1.6 billion people worldwide use online job platforms to search for employment opportunities. However, the huge number of websites, tools, apps, and networking platforms to choose from can make knowing where to start feel overwhelming.

The good news is that each platform serves a different purpose; some are better for searching for entry-level roles, some for connecting with recruiters, and some for exploring opportunities in a specific industry.

I've broken down the main types of online job platforms to help you focus your search, find opportunities more effectively, and access the “hidden job market”.

The Best Job Boards for Tech and Project Professionals

Job boards are often the first place people turn to when searching for a new role. Platforms such as Indeed, Total Jobs and Glassdoor, allow employers to advertise current vacancies across a wide range of industries, making it easy to streamline your search for opportunities based on job title, location, salary and experience level.

While Indeed and Totaljobs focus primarily on job listings, Glassdoor also provides valuable insights into employers. Indeed and Glassdoor have recently announced their partnership, meaning job seekers can now see both vacancies and employer insights in one ecosystem.

Top Tip for Using Job Boards

To maximise your chances of finding the right role, use filters to narrow your search, tailor your cover letter to each application and apply as early as possible, as many employers begin reviewing applications before a vacancy closes.

Recruitment Agencies

These differ from job boards as they essentially act as a "matchmaker" between job seeker and employer. Examples include Reed, Hays and Michael Page.

Rather than applying for hundreds of jobs individually, a recruitment agency can match you with roles that suit your skills, experience and career goals, helping to make your job search more efficient.

Recruitment agencies typically work in one of three ways:

  1. Permanent placements: Helping candidates secure long-term roles
  2. Temporary or contract work: Ideal for short-term positions, freelance opportunities or gaining experience
  3. Temp-to-perm: Starting in a temporary role with the potential to move into a permanent position

Some recruitment agencies also focus on specific locations, which can be particularly useful if you have a set area where you'd like to work.

Top Tip for Using Recruitment Agencies

Recruitment agencies tend to be specialised in certain industries, so make sure to research and choose one that is relevant to your desired field.

Networking Platforms

LinkedIn is one of the best ways to grow your professional network. It is more than just a job board; it's one of the most effective platforms for building your professional network while searching for new opportunities.

A complete, up-to-date LinkedIn profile, along with endorsements and recommendations from past and present colleagues, can help you make a strong first impression with recruiters and hiring managers.

The platform also makes it easy to connect with professionals in your chosen industry, allows you to follow companies you're interested in and engage with relevant content. Building these connections can increase your visibility and even open the door to opportunities that aren't publicly advertised.

Top Tip for Using Networking Platforms like LinkedIn

To get the most out of LinkedIn, think beyond the Jobs tab. Use the search bar to look for industry-specific hashtags such as #CyberSecurity, #IT, or #ProjectManagement, as well as #Hiring alongside your preferred location.

This can help you find recruiters, company posts, networking events, and vacancies that might not appear in the "Jobs" section.

Using AI to Boost Your Job Search

AI is transforming the way people search for jobs, making it easier to find opportunities that match their skills, experience and career goals.

One example is Jack & Jill, which allows jobseekers to physically have a conversation with an AI career agent about their experience, interests and ambitions. Based on this information, the platform sends tailored job recommendations directly to your inbox, helping to save time and surface opportunities that align with your career goals.

AI-users secure double the job offers of AI-avoiders, despite submitting fewer applications (median job search outcomes for AI-users and AI-avoiders, via ZipRecruiter, 2026).

AI can also support other stages of the job search, from refining your CV and tailoring cover letters to preparing for interviews. In fact, ZipRecruiter's New Hire Survey found that AI users submitted fewer applications while securing more interviews and offers, suggesting that using AI to create more targeted, higher-quality applications can be more effective than applying for as many roles as possible.

Top Tip for Using AI Platforms

Review any generated content to ensure it accurately reflects your skills, experience and personality, as these platforms can "hallucinate" and generate incorrect information.

With over half (56%) of recruiters reporting that they often or always receive CVs that contain AI-generated text, writing good prompts and properly checking the content it produces is crucial.
