Generative AI and automation are rapidly transforming the workplace and looking to the future, what do the UK’s workforce need to do to stay up-to-date and employable?

The most recent Pearson Lost in Translation report has revealed some alarming statistics for the digital workforce in the age of AI adaptation, with research suggesting that by 2030, around 65% of the skills needed for existing jobs will have changed.

As automation continues to advance, there’s an increasing demand for professionals who can strategically guide AI implementation, ensuring it’s used effectively, ethically, and in alignment with business goals. Individuals with the ability to manage workflows, interpret results, and optimise AI outcomes will play a vital role in shaping the future of work.

Without urgent action to develop the skills needed for the future, the UK risks significant economic repercussions. Current estimates suggest that the annual losses associated with workforce transition challenges in the UK could reach around £96 billion.

Ageing population and ever-changing landscapes are shaping the future of work

The growing skills gap isn’t entirely down to new technologies, by 2050, over 22% of Australians will be aged 60+, up from 16% in 2020. As experienced professionals retire, Australia is facing ‘talent cliffs’’, sharp drops in workforce availability across key industries. This shift highlights a powerful opportunity for individuals to retrain and upskill, building future-ready careers that fill these growing gaps.

With an estimated 1.5 million jobs potentially transformed by AI by 2030, it’s a better time than ever to invest in your future and equip yourself with the skills employers desperately need.

Crucial technical and soft skills are missed in education and between job shifts which are the biggest contributions to the ever-growing skills gap Australia is facing.

How automation is unlocking opportunities for career growth and increased earnings

The biggest disruption is due to increasing automation such as robotic process automation, large-language-model chatbots, and autonomous mobile robotics, all of which require specific skills for changed or completely new tasks. The report estimates this skills gap puts £64 billion in earnings at risk.

The report says ‘The potential boost to earnings from faster reskilling in response to automation is also significant. For instance, reducing the length of time it takes to reskill by 20 percent would yield additional employee earnings of £13 billion.’

Recent research from Skills England estimated that adoption of AI could boost the UK economy by up to £400 billion by 2030, with 7.5 million UK workers set to gain essential AI skills by that time.

A separate piece of research from the Government also highlighted that a setback for those in the job market found many programmes are isolated, lack progression pathways, and learners often cannot articulate or evidence their “AI skills”.
