Despite women comprising around 16% of the construction workforce, they represent only 4% of site managers in homebuilding. The Women into Home Building programme offers introductory training and hands-on work experience with the chance of a permanent job for those who excel. Since it began in January 2023, the programme has supported 92 candidates, with over 25 securing employment within the industry. The most recent cohort saw a record number of applications.
Pathway CTM has more than a decade of experience in supporting diverse talent pipelines across various sectors. Its extensive network of career-changing adults and new industry entrants positions it well to enhance the programme's reach and impact. Chris McNamara, Founder and CEO of Pathway CTM, said:
"By leveraging our access to recent education leavers and motivated adults seeking career transitions, we have a unique opportunity to bridge the gap and inspire more women into home building."
Diversifying the talent pool
The lack of women in site management is more than just a diversity issue - it’s a barrier to progress in an industry already struggling with skills shortages. According to HBF’s 2023 Workforce Census, the onsite homebuilding workforce remains overwhelmingly male, with 96.1% of respondents identifying as male.
As the UK government aims to build 1.5 million homes by 2029, addressing this gender imbalance will be key to strengthening the talent pipeline and ensuring the industry can meet demand.
Jenny Herdman, Director of the Home Building Skills Partnership at HBF, said:
“Our industry faces a significant skills shortage, and we need to ensure we are attracting a broad range of entrants if we are to meet the growing need for housing."
The role of career changers
Career changers are an untapped resource, yet, many industries overlook them due to rigid hiring practices.
Rachel Kay, Director of Education at Learning People, said:
"The demand for career changers is rising as companies strive to build strong, diverse talent pipelines, yet many industries are overlooking this valuable workforce. Career changers bring transferable skills, fresh perspectives, and adaptability—key qualities for innovation and growth."
By opening doors to women making career transitions, the sector can access a pool of talent that has the potential to bridge skills gaps and drive meaningful change.
Izzy Miller, Head of Employer Partnerships at Pathway CTM, said:
“This is such an important initiative and over the next few weeks we will be working with Learning People to support us in finding these amazing women!”
The programme includes:
- Comprehensive training
- A two-week work placement on a local home building site
- Insight from inspiring women already thriving in the industry
Contributions to travel and childcare costs
Site management offers a varied career path with significant earning potential. Trainee Assistant Site Managers earn up to £30,000, with more senior salaries exceeding £75,000.
Women interested in applying can register their interest for the Autumn 2025 cohort. Home builders looking to support or participate in the programme can find more information on the HBF website.
