70% of UK Jobs Face AI Exposure, Making Proficiency Essential
The latest government research has found that while 70% of UK jobs are now exposed to AI, the majority of businesses are still struggling to keep pace with AI adoption and application to key initiatives. This is creating huge demand for sector-specific AI skills, particularly within tech and project management.
The UK Government’s recently published report, AI Scenarios 2030, has revealed that around 70% of UK jobs are now exposed to artificial intelligence (AI), compared with roughly 60% across other advanced economies.
This does not mean that AI will cause seven in ten roles to disappear - rather, this new technology will reshape tasks across much of the labour market, making practical AI proficiency critical for tech and project management professionals.

Every Government Scenario Points to More Capable AI
The Government Office for Science report – produced with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the AI Security Institute – sets out five possible AI futures leading up to 2030.
They range from “Slow Burn”, where disruption remains limited, to “Take-Off”, where powerful systems trigger widespread job displacement and serious safety risks.
These scenarios are not designed to scare: they’re planning tools, helping employers and employees alike implement AI and automation effectively.
Despite their differences, each scenario shares a similarity: AI capability will grow. Even under slower development, systems could still automate a substantial number of digital workflows. While at the more extreme end, AI could match human cognitive performance and even outperform experts across almost every knowledge-based task.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has advanced rapidly over the past decade. The most advanced AI systems have shifted from laboratory curiosities to those beginning to reshape our world. They have already transformed fields such as software development and cybersecurity, and millions of ordinary people now use them throughout their day.
Adoption Is Uneven, but Skills Demand Is Accelerating
AI may dominate headlines, but it has not yet become an everyday tool across every workplace.
The Department for Science, Innovation & Technology recently reported that although AI use in the Professional and Business Services sector grew by 12% between 2024 and 2025, three-quarters are still trying to integrate AI into core enablers like data and monitoring. It’s consequently no surprise that the demand for AI skills in tech is so high.
UK job postings requiring specialist AI skills hit 180,000 in 2025, up from 112,000 in 2024. This sharp increase suggests employers are building capability before adoption reaches every team, creating demand for people who can apply AI to real operations rather than simply discuss it conceptually.
AI and Automation Will Shift Work Towards Strategy
Human skills and thinking do not vanish from the picture - in fact, they become far more significant.
Problem framing, strategic thinking, validation, stakeholder communication and responsible oversight become more valuable when machines handle more of the production. Organisations will need people who can question bots' and LLMs’ outputs, catch errors, integrate tools into existing systems, and decide when automation should stop.
That challenge extends into cybersecurity and governance. More capable AI could strengthen software defences and expose vulnerabilities faster. It could also enable sophisticated attacks and amplify malicious activity, which means technical proficiency must include security, ethics and accountability.
