Why Is January an Optimal Time to Search for a New Job?
CV-Library describes January as typically a peak time for hiring, and is when the UK's biggest drive takes place. Across the first quarter of 2026, advertised UK vacancies were up 7.6% on the same period in 2025, and then climbed another 5% in February, according to the REC and Lightcast.
Tech in particular rebounds strongly as an industry. The REC recorded almost 80,000 IT job postings in January 2026, with Programmers and Software Developers the most advertised occupation. We typically see that demand spread across IT support, cybersecurity, data, cloud, and project management roles.
And of course, competition for these jobs rises too in January. 47% of UK office workers planned to start job hunting in January 2026, so employers can favour candidates who are ready to start. That’s why we recommend starting your retraining in the autumn.
Starting now gives you time to earn your first certification, rework your CV with our Career Services team and be applying from the first week of January, rather than still studying while the first wave of roles is filled.
Can You Get Qualified Before Christmas?
It would certainly be possible for some people to pass a foundation-level certification before Christmas; this will depend on their chosen industry and courses, as well as how many hours a week they can study.
If your route is a full pathway, such as cybersecurity with several CompTIA certifications, you likely won't finish everything by Christmas; however, what matters is how far through you are when January arrives. You might be able to start applying for bridging roles with just one certification or while you complete the rest of your training.
"If you wait until January to start your training, you're potentially waiting until March or April before you're ready to start applying for roles, depending on how quickly you study. Whereas, if you start now, you could be working towards your qualifications, building your CV, and exploring opportunities in the New Year while other people are only just getting started."
And remember: any Learning People training you choose comes with 12 months of access, so you'll still have plenty of time to study after Christmas if December gets busy.
What Does Being Job-Ready by January Look Like?
Being job-ready means you have a recognised certification relevant to your chosen industry, or are close to one. It also means a CV and LinkedIn profile that tell your career-change story, and enough interview practice to talk confidently about your new skills. Here's how the next two months could look:
- Early November: book a free career consultation, choose your route, and start studying.
- November to mid-December: work through your core study and practice exams, then book your first exam.
- December: start our three-phase Career Services program to refine your CV and LinkedIn profile.
- Christmas break: use the quieter days for revision. I'd also suggest saving around 10 job adverts for the role you want and highlighting the skills that appear again and again.
- January: apply for roles and prepare for interviews with your Career Services consultant.

Why Do People Who Plan to Start in January Often Never Start?
The New Year rarely has more free time than autumn, as January brings post-Christmas bills, a busy return to work, and the same doubts that held you back in October. Our consultants see firsthand what happens next:
"From my own experience, I rarely speak to someone who says they'll enrol in January and then actually does. More often than not, I either don't hear from them again, or it's another six to eight months and they come back wishing they'd started sooner."
If you've already made an enquiry, you've done the part many people never get to: deciding what you want and asking how to get there. Starting now also changes how the festive period feels, as explained by my colleague, Sophi.
"Starting your training now will give you peace of mind. If you get the ball rolling now, you can enjoy Christmas without that career change hanging over you, knowing you've made a positive investment in yourself and have something exciting to look forward to in the New Year."
Final Thoughts: Getting Job-Ready Before Christmas
You can't control when employers advertise, but you can control how ready you are when they do.
