How Microsoft IT Certifications are Structured in 2026
Microsoft qualifications follow a skills-focused, role-based structure: Fundamentals certifications such as AZ-900, Associate certifications such as Azure Administrator (AZ-104), and finally Expert certifications such as Azure Solutions Architect (AZ-305). A team roadmap maps each engineer to the pathway for their role, sequences Fundamentals to Expert over 12 to 18 months, and keeps annual renewals current so both delivery capability and Microsoft Solutions Partner designations hold.
Microsoft organises its certifications into three levels, plus a newer format worth knowing about.
- Fundamentals validate baseline knowledge of a technology area. The main ones for an IT team are Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900), Security, Compliance and Identity Fundamentals (SC-900), Microsoft 365 Fundamentals (MS-900), Azure Data Fundamentals (DP-900) and Azure AI Fundamentals, now examined through AI-901 after the AI-900 exam retired at the end of June 2026. They never expire, so anyone who already holds the certification through AI-900 keeps it.
- Associate certifications validate a working job role. Azure Administrator (AZ-104), Azure Security Engineer (AZ-500) and Security Operations Analyst (SC-200) sit here. This is where most of your team's certification effort should go, because Associate certifications map to the work your engineers are billed out to do.
- Expert certifications validate design and architecture responsibility. Azure Solutions Architect (AZ-305), DevOps Engineer (AZ-400), Cybersecurity Architect (SC-100) and Microsoft 365 Administrator (MS-102) all require a qualifying Associate certification first, which is why sequencing matters.
The newer format is Applied Skills: shorter, scenario-based assessments run in a live lab environment that validate one specific capability rather than a full role. They are useful when a project needs a narrow skill proven quickly, and like Fundamentals they do not expire.
One structural fact shapes the whole roadmap: Associate and Expert certifications are valid for one year. Renewal is a free online assessment through Microsoft Learn, and the renewal window opens six months before expiry. A roadmap that gets ten engineers certified but has no renewal discipline gives you a capability position that quietly erodes, and a partner designation that erodes with it.

Three quick notes for using this table:
- The Expert prerequisites are specific. Azure Solutions Architect requires AZ-104 first. DevOps Engineer accepts AZ-104 or AZ-204. Cybersecurity Architect requires one of SC-200, SC-300 or AZ-500, which means a security engineer's Associate choice also decides their architecture route later.
- The data column changed recently. Microsoft retired the old Azure Data Engineer exam (DP-203) in 2025 as Microsoft Fabric became the centre of its data platform, so data pathways now run through the Fabric certifications (DP-600 and DP-700). If your team's data engineers certified under DP-203, their credential is legacy and the refresh belongs in this roadmap.
- Fundamentals are optional for experienced staff. An engineer with three years of Azure production work does not need AZ-900 before attempting AZ-104. Use Fundamentals where they earn their place: career-changers, service desk staff moving up, and non-technical colleagues who need shared vocabulary during a migration.
How to Sequence a Microsoft Certification Roadmap Across Your Team
Sequence it in phases against the delivery calendar, because the biggest reason team certification programmes stall is that exam preparation loses every scheduling conflict with billable work. A workable 12-to-18-month shape:
- Benchmark first (month 1). Establish who holds what today, which certifications have lapsed, and where the gaps sit against the work you have sold or planned. Skills benchmarking here does double duty: it sets the baseline you will measure capability uplift against, and it usually surfaces lapsed renewals nobody had tracked.
- Fundamentals for the people who need them (months 1 to 3). AZ-900 and SC-900 are short preparations, so run them as a first wave for junior staff and career-movers. Early passes build momentum, and momentum is worth more than it sounds in a programme that has to survive the winter delivery crunch.
- Associate certifications in role groups (months 3 to 9). This is the core of the roadmap. Put each engineer on the Associate pathway for the role they actually work in, and stagger cohorts so you never have half the bench in exam preparation during the same fortnight. Two or three people per cohort per quarter is sustainable for most teams; a practice of 15 engineers can realistically land eight to ten Associate certifications inside a year without delivery feeling it.
- Expert certifications for the leads (months 9 to 18). AZ-305 for the engineers who own designs, AZ-400 where you run DevOps delivery, SC-100 for the security lead. Expert exams demand more preparation time, so protect it in the schedule rather than hoping it happens around the edges.
- Renewals as standing discipline (from month 12). Someone owns the renewal calendar. The assessments are free and online, and a lapsed AZ-104 is an avoidable way to lose both a capability claim and partner skilling points.
Tie the phases to live work where you can. An Azure migration is the best certification accelerator a team ever gets: the landing-zone build maps almost directly onto AZ-104 content, and engineers pass exams faster when the material is the day job. Running the pathway alongside the migration lets project delivery double as exam preparation.
Aligning Your Business Training Roadmap to Microsoft Solutions Partner Status
In 2026, Microsoft certified staff are given a numbered score which then aligns to a distinct designation. Their Solutions Partner designations - which replaced the old Gold and Silver competencies - require a partner capability score of at least 70 points, and skilling is one of the scored categories alongside performance and customer success. The skilling points come from individuals holding current intermediate and advanced certifications, which in practice means the Associate and Expert credentials in the table above.
The designations most relevant to an IT practice are:
- Solutions Partner for Infrastructure (Azure)
- Digital and App Innovation (Azure)
- Data and AI (Azure)
- Modern Work
- Security
Each counts certifications aligned to its own solution area. So, the certification choices in your roadmap should be made with one eye on which designation you hold or want: a security practice chasing the Security designation gets more from SC-200 and SC-100 passes than from another AZ-104.
Consider attrition when creating your team’s training roadmap. If your designation depends on the certifications of two named engineers, one resignation puts the badge at risk and with it the marketplace credibility it carries into bids. Spreading certifications across the team is cheaper than discovering this during a renewal window, and it is exactly the kind of single-point-of-failure a benchmark in phase one will flag.
Microsoft Business Training: How to Keep Pass Rates High
Structure keeps your team on track as it anticipates common challenges and patterns: buy a content library, announce the goal, hope. Engineers browse for a fortnight, delivery pressure returns, and six months later nobody has sat an exam. The pattern that works gives each engineer a pathway with a booked exam date, practice labs, and a manager who treats preparation time as scheduled work rather than personal study.
The evidence points the same way. Accredible's 2025 State of Credentialing Report found that issuers running the most successful credentialing programmes were markedly more likely to offer pre-designed learning pathways than their peers, 64% against 45%. In my experience, these four practical steps improve pass rates:
- A booked exam date per person. Open-ended preparation never converges. A date eight to twelve weeks out does.
- Hands-on practice, not just video. The Azure exams test applied scenarios, so labs and practice environments matter more than watch-time. Fund the certifications, pace them across the roadmap, and pair them with progression, and the programme becomes a reason to stay.
