New tech skills government funding pledge: what this says about in-demand skills of the future

The ever-growing global skills gap for workers is becoming increasingly evident with the adoption and prioritisation of AI within businesses and ongoing cyber-attacks on global brands.

This point is only further solidified by the UK Government’s recent commitment to investing in mentoring, funding access and skills development to spark tech innovation outside of the capital. The government claims this is an attempt to ‘supercharge tech growth in UK regions’ to drive economic growth and change.

Addressing these skills gaps is the key for making the most of AI opportunities, according to Accenture’s research which reports that generative AI could add £736 billion to the UK’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2038 if people are correctly trained. So, it should come as no surprise that 98% of UK companies report technology as the top lever for reinvention with 83% of those companies seeing gen AI as the main driver.

AI won’t take your job; it’ll enhance/streamline it

Earlier this year, the World Economic Forum reported that advancements in technologies -- particularly AI and information processing, robotics and automation -- are expected to be transformative to businesses globally. These trends could fuel demand for technology-related skills, including AI, networks and cybersecurity and technological literacy, which are anticipated to be the top three fastest- growing skills from 2025-2030.

For the job market, AI and information processing technologies are among the top three drivers of demand for fastest growing roles. It’s been noted that generative AI can enhance human skills and performance within the workplace if applied appropriately within its capability, particularly for newer workers who perhaps lack the enhanced knowledge.

It's becoming clear that AI is fast becoming a core tool within tech roles, including cyber security. Rather than taking jobs, it is developing into a tool people need to be equipped with the skills to utilise for maximum output and efficiency.

It’s inevitable that the demand for AI skills will increase, so how can you get ahead?
