Setbacks, or a step forward?
Redundancy and job loss is a huge driver for a career change for people, it can feel hard turning your back on a career you’ve dedicated your life to, especially if you’re 40+. Redundancy certainly doesn’t have to mean the end, in fact, it offers a lot of our students a new opportunity to get into a career with more promising prospects.
Redundancy isn't a roadblock, it's a new opportunity
"The best conversation I ever had was with a gentleman who'd been working on games for all his life, managing projects and helping develop those childhood games we all used to play (or at least I did). An absolutely fascinating man, and very kind. He was made redundant and couldn't get into roles anymore, despite his amazing CV and his experience. That's why he wanted to get qualified and change his career into Project Management.”
Speaking to my colleagues in Australia and New Zealand, they also had stories of people changing career later in life, in particular, Judeah on the Student Care team:
It's never too late for a change
“I onboarded a woman in her 60s who had lived such a full life. She had been a beekeeper, built a business, and even owned several properties. Yet instead of slowing down, she felt the pull of learning something entirely new.
She found Learning People, enrolled in our Cyber starter pathway, and showed up to orientation with a notebook, a new headset, and the excitement of someone just beginning a new adventure.
Her journey is a powerful reminder of what Learning People gives to students. It is not just about gaining certifications, but about hope, growth, and the joy of having something to look forward to. It shows that no matter your age or background, it is never too late to take the next step.”
We are most inspired by those that re-enter the workforce
“the ambition and commitment to getting back into the industry is always something else.
Getting back into a career or even starting a new one can be daunting but taking the first step is always the hardest. It's honestly a pleasure to be part of the start of that journey to help plan out their ambitions and sometimes just provide support to people taking such a brave step forward.”
Your skills will help you more than you know
People are often surprised about the amount of transferrable skills they already possess, or how they’ve already essentially been doing the role already.
“People say they have been managing projects for years without the title, and they were finally ready to be recognised and paid properly for it.
Some people don't even realise until we have the conversation that they have experience. That's what is great with the training as it verifies their existing experience as well as teaches them more advanced skills to progress”
After reading the comments and having more conversations face to face, it became obvious there was a universal desire for more job satisfaction and a future-proof career to protect our students’ families. Fitting studies and work around growing a family isn’t easy, but plenty of our students do it successfully and land dream roles offering them the flexibility, finances and satisfaction they desire.
