We caught up with Learning People student and graduate Matteo Imeri who successfully changed his career post-pandemic. 

Matteo studied and completed the Diploma in Full Stack Software Development which helped him go from a Mechanical Engineer to a Junior Full-stack Developer.

 

Tell us why you enquired with Learning People.

I was looking for a coding course and found Learning People online. It was important for me to get a recognised qualification and I noticed the diploma in Full Stack Software development and requested a phone call.  

 

Did you want to gain or develop any specific skills by enrolling with Learning People?

I wanted to learn more about software development. It’s something I’ve touched on before when I was a music producer and sound engineer, so I was familiar with using a  lot of software. Some of my friends were able to modify software they were using for their own needs but it sounded really complicated. One of them said to me, “It can be difficult at the beginning, but once you learn to code there’s so much you can do with it.” And once I saw the training and qualification on the Learning People website, I decided that this was a skill I wanted to learn.  

 

Was there a particular reason you enrolled with Learning People, and did you speak to other educators or training providers?

Learning People had really good reviews online and very strong career support. Coming from a completely different industry, and looking to change a career, career support was something I thought I would need once I finished the training course.  At the time, my job was a mechanical engineer, so I had no idea about tech companies and what they were looking for. Apart from some friends in the US and Netherlands who already worked in the industry, I didn’t have anyone to help me transition into tech so having professional help and guidance with creating my CV and understanding how to enter the industry was a huge help. 

 

Tell us what the career consultation phone call was like for you. 

It was very good. The person I spoke to explained everything about the course and how Learning People would support me throughout the training process, the skills I would gain, and the chances of getting a job. They also made sure I would have enough time to complete the course by asking about my home life, work and personal commitments. It was really reassuring.  

 

Tell us about your experience of learning using our system.

This was my first experience of learning online and it was all very good. It was very straightforward and easy to use. I could see how I was tracking and if I was falling behind or working ahead of schedule. All the tools were very well explained too.  

 

Were you able to gain support from our StudentCare™ team when you needed it?

Yes, I emailed StudentCare™ Support to access a webinar and had a response within 1 hour.  

 

Did you utilise any of the course mentoring – if so, how did it help you?

Yes, for every project there were 3 sessions with the mentor. I was very lucky as my mentor has been coding since the 1970’s so he was very experienced and was great at making sure I was able to stay on track. He also helped me gain insight into the industry by telling me about how to approach different companies and what the work would be like. I was very pleased with my mentor and the advice I was given while studying with Learning People.  

 

How did you get on with the projects?

Every 3 months there was a project which was applying the language you’ve learnt into a practical project and you had to reach the requirements to pass.   

 

Tell us about your experience of working with our Career Services team, and what did you find most useful?

Very well. Robyn was my consultant and she was absolutely brilliant. She helped me with my CV and every time I had an interview she was very supportive and positive which really helped me to push and find the right placement. She made me realise that you will help me find the company that’s right for me.  

 

How did enrolling with Learning People affect your career?

I was a mechanical engineer for 20 years and, after the Covid pandemic, I had noticed the industry was slowing down. Enrolling with learning people helped me change my career and learn a new skill set and land a job in development. 

 

Tell us about your new job.

I’m now working for DBD Distribution who decided to go paper free around 10 years ago. They have an in-house dev team - two back end developers and 1 front end developer. Currently, I’m working in between both teams and they want me to move into a full stack developer position. It’s an extremely good company, I feel very lucky.  

 

What has been the best part of your Learning People experience? 

The support from the Career Services team. They really helped and always tagged me on LinkedIn for different jobs that came up nearby. For me, the Career Services team are key players at Learning People.

 

What advice would you give to somebody who is thinking about enrolling with Learning People?

Go through what you want to do with the career consultants and make the most of this service - It’s brilliant! If you’re going through a career change you don’t have any network or connections, having someone with all the knowledge of the tech industry is essential. I’m pretty sure that if I didn’t have Learning People helping me with my CV, LinkedIn profile and virtual seminars,I’d still be looking for a job. I even had people with more experience than me asking how I got a job in development so quickly.
