An interview with Neil Patel
We spoke to Neil Patel about his career success and what advice he would give to the next generation of tech professionals.
Since starting his very first business in high school, 29 year old Neil Patel, co founder of Crazy Egg, Hello Bar and KISSmetrics and a recognised influential entrepreneur, has been named by The Wall Street Journal as a top influencer on the web and has been named by Forbes as one of the top 10 online marketers.
Neil talks to us about lessons learnt, inspiration and the web.
You once said“They make a lot of mistakes and they don’t learn from them, which causes many of them to fail.” What are the biggest obstacles facing young entrepreneurs?
“A good way to reduce the amount of obstacles you put yourself against is to start making decisions based on data instead of opinions.”
What do you know now that you wish you’d known when you began your career?
“I wish someone had told me to focus. If I focused my effort on one business instead of multiple businesses I would have been better off.”
What’s the best way to engage others with a new idea?
“You just have to talk to them or reach out through a survey. This way you can engage with your potential audience to see how a new idea will be received.”
What’s a common question you get asked?
“What new strategies are companies and startups using to grow? This is the most common question I get asked, and I typically tell them about growth hacking when they ask me this.
“Growth hacking is the practice of pushing a metric through use of a testable and scalable methodology – people become very passionate and focused on it.”
What would you describe as a successful team?
“A team that is knowledgeable and knows how to execute a project with the client’s best interests at heart.”
When setting up a business, what are the key things to remember?
“Keep your costs low, create a MVP – minimum viable product – and learn from your customers. A MVP is a product with the highest return on investment versus risk. Too many businesses try to make everything perfect when they are starting out – this isn’t wise because you won’t even know if your business is going to be successful yet.”
What excites you about the web?
“Innovation – I love seeing people do new things and leverage new marketing tactics.”
What inspires you?
“Innovation. I love watching entrepreneurs like Elon Musk create new innovative companies. Even the startups on sites like Kickstart are doing innovative things which are really interesting to watch.”
