We catch up with Learning People student Bryan Pepple who changed career from being in the Navy to a Cloud Computing professional…

Tell us why you enquired with Learning People…

I used to be in the Navy and was thinking about my long-term career and where I saw myself being in terms of finances and what was available to me and how far I could get.

And I came to the conclusion that I’m better off back on land, learning new skills to develop myself. So I spent some time researching online what I needed to change my career.

I found Learning People and checked out the student testimonials and a virtual seminar and everything just made sense.

Were there any specific skills you were looking to gain or develop by enrolling with Learning People?

I always wanted to study computer science, but I come from an African home, so my background is pretty much that my dad makes the decisions about what I should do and what I should study. He wanted me to be an engineer, a medical doctor or a scientist.

I’ve always been interested in IT and tried to figure stuff out for myself with tech. I wouldn’t say I’m one of those guys that knows about coding, but in general, I have an interest in computers and technical stuff.

I was an engineer with the Navy which had nothing to do with IT but I did know how to use Microsoft PowerPoint because of the work I’d done previously in the student union and using Microsoft Word for university work too.

Tell us about your experience of working with our Career Services team, and what did you find most useful?

Career Services were spot on. I had really good advice from Rachel and a lot of help with my CV. I also attended the workshops that they do around CVs and for LinkedIn – there’s a lot that they bring to the table. Especially what approach works best for applying for different jobs.

How did enrolling with Learning People affect your career?

I would say it’s been great. Because I really don’t think I would have been able to make the change by myself, especially at those moments when you really need someone to talk to. When you need professional advice there are people available that you can trust.

Tell us about your new job

A lot of people told me I would not be able to get a job with the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner on its own – but I had three job offers with that one single certification.

I turned down two of the offers and went for the role with Dataflexnet as a Junior Cloud Engineer, which is actually more like a DevOps role and I’m learning all the time. We use AWS a lot at Dataflexnet and I can definitely say that because I’ve done the AWS certification it’s been easy for me to come into the role.

What has been the best part of your Learning People experience?

I’m really glad that I chose to enrol with Learning people. One thing I really liked is having unlimited re-sits on my exams.

What advice would you give to somebody who is thinking about enrolling with Learning People?

I’ve already recommended Learning People to three of my friends. If you want to change your career then definitely go to Learning People. Even if you’re just looking to top up your career, Learning People can put you in the right direction.

Don’t just take our word for it...
