Tell us why you enquired with Learning People

I was teaching at the time which I really wasn’t enjoying. And it was around the time of lockdown, which felt like a good time for me to learn a new skill and do something else.

At the same time, I’d started looking at Python because it interested me. So I looked at a couple of tutorials which seemed to make sense. As I learned more about Python, I got more invested in it, and I started to notice that there was a big job market for the skills. So that helped me decide to leave teaching and take on a new career path.

 

Were there any specific skills you were looking to gain or develop by enrolling with Learning People?

One of the main reasons I was looking into Python was trying to find an easier and more effective way to keep track of my student’s marks. And I thought that Python would be a good tool for it. 

Was there a particular reason you chose to enrol with Learning People, and did you speak to any other educators or training providers?
The thing that led me to enrol with learning people was actually the testimonials. It was great to see lots of people explaining what they were doing before and after.

 

Tell us about your experience of learning online using our system and the associated tools

I enjoyed it. I liked the way the content was split into modules because it enabled me to view my progress as I was working through the course material.

There were lots of individual tutorial videos that really helped me understand what I was learning and it was all just really straightforward.

 

Were you able to gain support from our StudentCare™ team when you needed it?

Yeah. I didn’t really need them much, but when I did reach out they got back to me quickly.

 

How did you get on with the exams?

They were nerve-racking, like any exam should be, but I got through it, and passed.

 

Tell us about your experience of working with our Career Services team

I remember talking with Marisha quite a bit. She really helped me with my CV and LinkedIn profile so I stood out to employers. And it was actually because of my LinkedIn profile that I was contacted about the job that I’m in now.

 

How was the career change for you?

It was a bit daunting because I was getting into a whole new line of work and I was joining a company where some of the new employees had come out of university with a masters degree. But once you’ve learned one language you really start to understand the concept of how they all work together – and within a month I really felt like part of the team.  

 

Tell us about your recent promotion from Data Analyst to Data Engineer

So I got the analyst job because I knew Python and some SQL, which I use a lot. But I was able to keep learning new skills and languages because I still had access to the Learning People platform, which enabled me to learn more about the back-end languages and specialities. So I told my employer about it and asked about doing more back-end work, and they said they would let me know if anything becomes available, which they did. They confirmed there was a position for Data Engineer becoming available and were actually very accommodating in helping me achieve the promotion. 

 

What has been the best part of your learning experience?

Career Services. It’s one thing to be able to learn programming, but when it comes to putting a LinkedIn profile together and making sure your CV is presented correctly is another. So having Marisha support me through getting it all sorted and also understanding what I was looking for was really helpful. 

 

What advice would you give to somebody who is thinking about enrolling with Learning People?

I would say go ahead and do it – and I would also say that you have to stick with it. It’s all about being consistent and making sure you get a little bit done every day.
